How to Change the Google Chrome Background with Your Own Photo

Do you want to change Google Chrome’s background but don’t want to bother making a theme extension first?

The good news, Google through a recent update has provided the means change Chrome background easily.

You don’t need to create themes manually or ask for help from third-party software. The option to change the background can now be done with just a few steps.

So, how do you replace the Google Chrome background with your own photo?

NOTES: The feature of changing the background is only available in the Chrome variant 69.0.3497.81 and above. Please read the guide How to Update Google Chrome if you are not already using the latest version of Chrome.

How to replace Chrome background with your own photo

1. Open a new tab (CTRL+T) then click Customize in the lower right corner.

2. Select Upload from device.

3. Select the image you want to use as the background, then open.

4. Done. Chrome now has a background image.

5. To make it even prettier, you can also change the theme color (see step 2) to match.

Do photo backgrounds make Chrome heavy?

According to my observations in Google Chrome’s Task Manager, this feature is surprisingly lighter than the traditional theme extensions available in the Chrome Web Store.

Does this feature exist in the Android version of Chrome?

Unfortunately not yet. Even if your account is synced on a mobile platform, the Chrome mobile background won’t be affected because Google prioritizes performance over visual variety.
